Description

Teach your students how to analyze multiple sources and bring them together to form a cohesive argument. This is a great AP Language and Composition resource to teach the synthesis essay! It's also perfect as an introduction to research, analyzing sources, and defending claims. This workbook will walk them through the process step-by-step:

1) understanding your requirements

2) understanding the task/prompt

3) analyzing sources related to that prompt/task

4) creating a thesis statement with a claim

5) taking notes to organize the essay into major points with support from the sources

6) writing an introduction and conclusion

7) integrating sources in body paragraphs

8) documenting sources using APA formatting

9) editing with an after-writing checklist

A prompt about the pursuit of power with six sources is included.* This would be a great essay to use in conjunction with a novel/drama study, such as Macbeth, Animal Farm, King Lear, etc.

The workbook can be assigned in print or digital format.

*All of the content on the slides are editable text so you can edit it to fit your class. Due to copyright and terms of use headings and clip art may not be editable.

Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Introduce precise, knowledgeable claim(s), establish the significance of the claim(s), distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and create an organization that logically sequences claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence.
Develop claim(s) and counterclaims fairly and thoroughly, supplying the most relevant evidence for each while pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the audience’s knowledge level, concerns, values, and possible biases.
Use words, phrases, and clauses as well as varied syntax to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships between claim(s) and reasons, between reasons and evidence, and between claim(s) and counterclaims.
Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which they are writing.
