What educators are saying

I used this during state testing week when we were very off schedule and my students were very engaged!
I bough this resource 3 years ago and I use it every year with my kids. They absolutely love this project and it kept even my online learners engaged! Even after they turn in their projects, they ask me if they can complete it again. This is a wonderful resource!

Description

"What began as the perfect weekend ended with the outbreak that hasn’t stopped. Early on, while the electricity was on, the news was calling it a virus outbreak. People were infected. There was no cure. Some claimed it was zombies."

How would your students respond to a zombie outbreak? What would they do and where would they go? Do they have survival skills? Could they work as a team? Surviving a zombie outbreak might not be real, but it's definitely worth problem solving and seeing how their ideas would work when they're some of the last kids on earth.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

Survive The Zombie Outbreak integrates elements of research, planning, problem solving, and ELA skills as students survive a virus outbreak by using their school as their home base. At the end of this PBL students will have a more complete understanding of the skills needed to survive an outbreak with zombies.

Students will need to have access to a variety of resources to complete this PBL. This could include maps, internet access, laptops/computers/devices, geographical books, and more.

There are 17 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research. As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

What's Included

PAGE Title Contents

6 Title Page - Introduction

8 Where were you?

Students create a single page comic telling the story of where they were when the outbreak began.

9 Vocabulary

Students write definitions or draw illustrations of vocabulary terms that relate to the outbreak

10 Who’s With You

Students write about four other students that are with them during the time of survival.

11 Before the Electricity Went Out

Students recreate the last transmissions they saw from the internet and television before the electricity went out.

12 Map Your School

Students create a map of their school, finding locations around the building to secure and virus-proof.

13 Ground Rules

Students create specific rules that must be followed to ensure that they are safe.

14 Sound the Alarms

Students design alarms for the doors and entry access points that will alert them if someone tries to enter the building.

15 Roof Top

Students survey the infected herds and take notes. They’ll sketch out what it looks like on the ground.

16 Inventory and Supplies

Students must take inventory of supplies they have in the school. Then they’ll rank the top 8 supplies and write about why they are important.

18 Skill Set

As survival becomes more and more important, students will need to identify key skills they must have to survive. They’ll also write about why these skills are important and if they have them.

19 Map Your Location

Students map out a larger location of the area. This will include the neighborhood, city blocks, or anything else important. It will help them understand which routes to take when looking for supplies.

20 The Notebook

Students use a notebook to keep track of locations and areas they’ve scouted, along with other important information they learn along the way.

21 Supply Runs

Students will prepare for a supply run. This includes preparing for any problems they might come across, planning out the route, and deciding where they will go.

23 Getting Graphic

Students will use graphic novel templates and writing prompts to create mimi-stories of their survival time. There are also blank templates for students to create their own stories.

32 The Journal

Students will write journal entries using writing prompts or with the blank journal pages (where they can make up their own ideas).

42 Extension Ideas

This is a page of ideas that can be incorporated into the PBL. These don’t have to be done, but they might work for classrooms or individual students. The choice is yours.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions. Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
