What educators are saying

This was great. I used it with earlier finishers and it supported their learning/understanding of volume while also keeping them engaged.
My students LOVED this!!! It definitely takes more than one period (my classes are 40 mins) to complete, but they had so much fun and were excited to display their figures.

    Description

Looking to connect with your kids over their favorite video game? Want a hands-on activity that will impress parents at open house or back to school night?

Try these unofficial Minecraft project-based learning activity where students compute the surface area and volume of geometric nets, and then can color and assemble those nets into their very own version of the character Steve and the creeper to take home! Steve is an easier activity since it involves working with whole number or decimal lengths, widths, heights. The Creeper activity involves working with fractional dimensions.

    What's included?

This bundle includes 2 Minecraft-inspired activities, where students compute surface area and volume of geometric nets, and then assemble those nets into characters from the game.

    • Activity 1: Steve: Steve is one of the protagonists in Minecraft.
      • Math skills: surface area and volume of rectangular prism with whole number or decimal dimensions.

    • Activity 2: The Creeper: Creepers are fictional creatures in Minecraft. They are "hostile" mobile non-player characters that can be spawn randomly in the game.
      • Math skills: surface area and volume of rectangular prism with fractional dimensions.

    What's included?

Each of the two activities includes:

    • Black & white worksheets -- more artistic lesson, students can color in!
    • Color worksheets -- faster lesson, no need to color!
    • Instructions
    • Answer key

    What do you need?

    • Printouts of the activity
    • Scissors
    • Glue sticks or tape
    • Colored pencils or markers (for black & white worksheets)

Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas 𝘝 = 𝘭 𝘸 𝘩 and 𝘝 = 𝘣 𝘩 to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
