Description

Students take a journey into history and the fascinating world of Archimedes. They follow his footsteps as he determines the ratio “pi”, discovers the relationship between a sphere and a cylinder, and helps King Hiero determine the density of his crown! This project integrates history, physics, and mathematics. This project is perfectly suited for your scientific students who are interested in answering the questions “why” and “how” does that work!?!

This is a Project Steps Only Resource that is ideal supplementary activity for pre-algebra lessons on finding surface area and volume of shapes and 3D solid figures. This is made available to save you money than purchasing the whole project bundle.

In this resource, you will find…

• A project steps only Student Guide—designed so that students can work as independently as possible on project steps

• A Teacher Guide—designed to give you project information you need including a materials list

YOU WILL NEED

• Your own lessons, activities, worksheets, practice and quizzes for the three key lessons in this project:

• Shapes and Solids—Slicing and Wrapping 3D shapes

• Surface Area

• Volume

• You may also want your own lessons on the prerequisite skills for Area and Perimeter

If this is too much work…purchase the full unit instead. I’ve done all the work for you!

Archimedes’ Bathtub Full Unit

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and homeschool

Duration: 1 Week (5 hours) on Project Steps Only, with Key Lessons this expands to a 3-4 week unit on 3D Geometry.

About “The Project Shop” by the Mobile Montessorian

Project Shop projects are designed with middle school students in mind. They offer integrated, exciting topics for students to learn. The Student Guides provide independence so that students can be in charge of their own learning while you are freed to manage your classroom, observe your student’s progress and interaction, provide intervention and even offer more challenges.

The Teacher Guides help you know how long a project should last, what might be necessary to prepare and gives you lesson suggestion on each topic. Everything is designed with four tenets in mind:

· Independence—greater self-efficacy through independently-driven tasks

· Meaningful Work—greater engagement through adult-like work

· Hands-on Experiences—greater understanding through integration of the hand and mind

· Wellbeing—reflection and care opportunities for the self, others, and the environment
