Description

This lesson/activity is about learning prophetic techniques. Has been used in association with The Crucible, but also could be thematically connected to Poe short stories, Macbeth, the Puritans, The Odyssey (role of oracles/fate) and the short story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter. Can be used a stand-alone around Halloween to discuss the practice of prophecy/superstitions in history or as a glimpse in to the history of psychology. Includes ppt lecture, handouts to set up 5 superstition stations so students can practice fortune telling with astrology, dice throwing, phrenology, card reading and palm reading. Wraps up with essay question/discussion. Teacher can modify easily based on class size. Will need to have two pairs of dice and at least one deck playing cards. High level of engagement.
