What are the benefits of movement breaks for children?

- MOVEMENT IMPROVES FOCUS: According to Harvard University researcher, John Ratey, MD, exercise releases dopamine and dopamine improves focus. Further research supports that moderate intensity exercise increases sustained attention. (Radel et al 2018)

- MOVEMENT MAY ENHANCE COGNITION: Many studies look at the effects of exercise on a child’s cognition. Movement stimulates thinking parts of the brain. Research from long-term studies suggests that exercise helps cognitive function (Donnelly et al 2016).

- MOVEMENT REDUCES STRESS: In 2013, Finnish researchers found that children who exercise had lower stress than children who did not exercise.

- MOVEMENT IS HEALTHY FOR KIDS’ BODIES: A wealth of research shows that children who exercise have stronger muscles and bones, less chance of diabetes, and lower blood pressure.

- MOVEMENT BOOSTS MOOD: Research in the Journal, Pediatrics, showed that six-year-olds who did moderate exercise showed fewer depressive symptoms (Zahl et al 2017).
