Description

This guided composition is a great end of the year activity for beginning intermediate recorder players!

Students will:

-Review the notes B, A, G, D, and E by writing them on the staff and filling in the fingering charts.

-Brainstorm what they love to do over the summer!

-Compose an 8 measure melody in 4/4 time signature using these notes and quarter, half, eighth rhythms/rests.

In the first 4 measures, the lyrics and rhythm are given, and students must turn it into a melody by notating on the staff. In the last 4 measures, students use their brainstormed summer activities to write their own lyrics, rhythm, and melody to complete the composition.

Composition is an integral part of the National Standards for Music Education. This is a great way to make composition approachable for 3rd-5th grade students (and who isn't thinking about summer?!) This activity also makes a great informal assessment.
