Description

This summer writing prompts resource includes 15 summer writing prompts to get students thinking and writing about the changes that occur with the summer season. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

Opinion Writing Prompts

  • Do schools need to take summer breaks? Explain your reasons and opinion.
  • Should families have game night? Explain your reasons and opinion.
  • Is it important for children to spend time with their grandparents? Why?
  • Should children join summer sports teams? Explain your reasons and opinion.
  • Is it important to spend time with friends during the summer? Explain your reasons and opinion.

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

  • Do you help prepare the summer meals? Explain how you are helpful.
  • Do you have a favorite flavor of ice cream? Explain how to make your favorite and what you like best about it.
  • Shopping trip! Explain what you need to buy for the summer.
  • What is your favorite summer activity? Why is it your favorite?
  • A new bike would be great! Write to explain to your parents why a new bike is needed.

Narrative Writing Prompts
