Description
This is a student-friendly summary writing rubric that may be applied to nonfiction or fiction text summaries. The rubric is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for identifying key central ideas and details and composing objective summaries. I've also included a student self-assessment and reflection form.
This download includes both a printable PDF file and a link to an editable Google Doc file. The rubric is also included in both a standard-specific and holistic format.
The standard-specific rubric is divided into four columns:
- Central Ideas: assesses the students' ability to identify the central idea(s) of a text
- Evidence: assesses the students' ability to cite specific, relevant text evidence to support the central idea(s)
- Language: assesses the students' ability to compose a concise summary using clear, precise, and objective language, as well as avoid formulaic phrases such as "this is what the story is about."
- Mechanics: assesses the students' ability to compose clear and coherent writing with a logical structure and use proper spelling and grammar.
