      • 3 Summary Detectives: Students will read a text. They will then read 4 different paragraphs relating to the text. They will write if each one is a summary or not and why.   
      • 3 Sort it Out: Students sort ideas into their corresponding part of a summary using the TAMS acronym.  
      • 2 Find the Parts: Students read a summary and underline each part with a specified color. 
      • 3 Locate the Key Words: Students will read 3 texts that contain underlined words. They will determine if the underlined words are important, unimportant, or a mix of both. 
      • 3 Is it Important?: Students will be given the about/topic and main idea parts of a summary. They will read 6 details and decide if they are important or not important based on the main idea. 
      • 9 Summarize (1, 3, & 5 paragraphs): Students will read nonfiction texts of varying lengths. They will complete an organizer and use it to write a summary of the text in their own words. 

    • LEVEL 2 (differentiated)
      • 3 Summary Detectives: Students will read a text along with 4 different paragraphs relating to the text. They will answer multiple-choice questions about whether each paragraph is a summary or not and why.  
      • 2 Sort it Out: Students will read ideas for each part of a summary on an organizer. They will circle the idea that is written in the incorrect part of the organizer. 
      • 3 Find the Parts: Students will read a summary and answer multiple choice questions about labeled parts of the summary. 
      • 3 Locate the Key Words: Students will read 2 texts that contain underlined words. They will determine if the underlined words are important or unimportant.  
      • 3 Is it Important?: Students will be given the about/topic and main idea parts of a summary. They will read 6 details and decide if they are important or not important based on the main idea. 
      • 9 Summarize (1, 3, & 5 paragraphs): Students will read texts of varying lengths. They will complete an organizer by circling the correct information and use it to write a summary of the text in their own words using provided sentence stems. 

    • Answer keys are provided for all activities.
