Description

Great for GATE and ELD! Move beyond "somebody wanted but so" summaries and give them the writing superpower tools they need to become more autonomous writers. These 25 sophisticated sentence frames with embedded word banks help your students pinpoint conflict and craft more sophisticated summary statements. Summarize novels, movies, children's books or even video games. Have them use their best movie trailer voices, of course. I always imagine Don LaFontaine or Morgan Freeman: "In a world where..." Kids love how smart they sound. Perfect for small groups, guided writing, teaching conferences, homeschooling, and tutoring! Follow me to build your teacher and tutor toolbox! Make them feel brilliant. Thanks for visiting. Happy teaching!

Next step: Craft the rest of the literary essay introduction (hook, summary statement, and thesis statement).

Other Suggested Uses/Activities

  • End of the Year: Use these to have students reflect and then summarize their school year. (Note: This would also work for the end of the term.)
  • Community Circle: Use these to have students summarize and later discuss their challenges.
  • Reading Log Alternative: Have them summarize their pleasure reading books and then create video book trailers.
