Substance use and abuse slides, worksheet, craft, activities, digital BUNDLE

Delve into the dangers of drug abuse, with an active learning unit designed to help your students engage with, think and consider reality in our society. Substance abuse is nuanced. It is not enough to inform students about its dangers. Empowerment is a process, not a lesson.  This unit allows students to process the information, consequences and dangers individually, creatively, in small groups and discussion.  A  colorful, animated PowerPoint presentation introduces the long term effects of substance abuse. The digital substance abuse game integrates into the lesson stream at this point:

There are five interactive activities (30 questions) to complete. The first 2 sections revise their knowledge of the long term effects of substance abuse. The third follows watching a YouTube video about reducing HIV infections in substance abusers - encouraging insight and memory.  A “Blog post of Fetal alcohol syndrome” is used as a reading for meaning exercise. Finally students use their knowledge  to create an Instagram post to raise awareness of FAS and how it can be prevented.   All five activities must be completed to win the game. Correct answers are rewarded by a response, and unlock the next activity.

The Jigsaw activity requires students to read and share the short and long term consequences of heroin, crystal meth, Fentanyl, marijuana and alcohol abuse - to complete a 2 page table. This lends an opportunity to create a pamphlet on the dangers of abusing 1 or more substances. A newspaper article on the rising problem of Opioid abuse combines reading informational texts with a creative activity. Students can consolidate their knowledge with a class/group debate based on an S-O-S (Statement-Opinion-Support) activity based on 10 colorful statement cards.
