What educators are saying

This is a well-rounded anticipation activity before Night. I wanted to have tactile resources to help my EL students understand the hard concepts addressed in Night, but they helped my native English speaking students as well. I loved the collaboration built into the activity stations as well.
I used this with two 8th grade ELA support classes. The students really engaged in conversation based on captions, excerpts, and the photo analysis. The instructions were easy to follow. We used the print version of the stations. I will use this resource again. Excellent product!

Description

Included are six station activities with four stations focused on building students' knowledge about the Holocaust and the related text you will be reading. The final two stations are focused on specifically introducing the characters in and author of Night, but could be edited to reflect the text or text(s) that you will be using during your Holocaust unit. Station activities include: ABC Graffiti, an anticipation guide and discussion, photograph analysis, text cover free write, and an introduction to the characters and author of Night.

Before using these stations, your students should have some background information about the Holocaust. My Holocaust Introduction Presentation and/or readings from my Holocaust Themed Nonfiction Readings & Responses would be excellent resources for providing students with that background knowledge.

Print Usage

Each station includes directions and the necessary manipulatives. Blank station directions and manipulatives are included so that you can create your own stations if desired. You can print the directions and manipulatives on paper or cardstock and then laminate to make the materials more durable. If you don't have access to a laminator, you can put the direction sheets inside a plastic page protector to help them last longer.

If you are comfortable with movement in your classroom set up the stations throughout your classroom and have groups of students move through the stations. Use the station checklist to track which stations groups have completed. If you are not comfortable with having the students move around in your classroom, moving the stations is another option.

Digital Usage

The Google Slides containing the directions for each station and the manipulatives are ready for immediate use and do not require any preparation on your part. You will assign the Slides so that each student has their own copy. You could have students work together in groups through Google Meet or Zoom.
