What educators are saying

My students had a great time using this in class. I was able to leave this activity for my sub to use while I was out. It was a great cross-curriculum project between Science and Math. I was even able to do some ELA with it by reading some of the stories that surround the constellations.
My 5th graders loved this activity. To add a little science in math class was fun and the kids really enjoyed it

Description

Graphing the Constellations: This activity integrates Math and Science by teaching students about coordinate graphing as well as the constellations! The constellations are precisely positioned so that their positions match that of their actual positions in the sky! This can even be used as a constellation star map!

UPDATE (10/12/16): I have tweaked many of the pictures to make it easier for students to connect the dots for each constellation. Please re-download to receive this update.

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
