What educators are saying

Great resource for the beginning of the year! I liked the reinforcement of library rules. Students were engaged with the activities.
This was great to use with my students in January after coming back from the holiday break. They loved the book and the extension activities.

Description

Want a January library lesson for K-2 that will get kids thinking about New Year's resolutions regarding book care and library rules? First, read Squirrel's New Year's Resolution by Pat Miller. The book is not included -- but it is easily found on YouTube. (DOUBLE BUT...you should BUY A COPY! It will be a great addition to your collection! :) ) After reading, use my graphics to lead a class discussion. Each slide shows a pair of slightly-confused squirrels who have just proudly made up 16 library resolutions that cover issues like:

Returning books on time.
⭐ Using bookmarks.
⭐ Keeping books clean and dry.
⭐ Choosing "just right" books, and so on.

Another BUT... some of those new rules...oh my stars! During the discussion, your students will "help" the squirrels decide if (thumbs UP) their resolutions are GREAT ideas - or if (thumbs DOWN) they miiiggghhht need a little tweaking! Some rules will definitely need some revision with the help of your savvy library patrons!

(NOTE: Seriously...some of the squirrels' rules are the EXACT OPPOSITE of what we REALLY want our students to do... silly squirrels! Luckily, your smart students are around to set these kooky squirrels straight!) :)

BONUS: I added a simple exit ticket that can serve as a quick extension for your students as they wait to exchange books.

This resource provides a light-hearted, but very important reminder lesson for right-after-winter-break!
