Spring Poetry Readers (Decodable CVC and Sight Words)
- PDF
Description
Build confidence in your beginning readers with these beautiful and unique decodable reading books! The read-with-me format allows the student to gain practice recognizing high frequency words in a fun and non-intimidating way, while also exposing them to real, beautiful literature. Each reader contains a classic spring poem (taken from the public domain), illustrated with simple watercolor images.
While the teacher reads the bulk of the text (in black print), the student has the opportunity to jump in and read 1-3 words on each page (in red print). The highlighted student words are either decodable three-letter (CVC) words with short vowels, or one of 10 high-frequency, non-phonetic sight words. (These are the same sight words taught and used in my other sets of CVC readers.)
Note that these readers are larger format than my other sets of readers, due to the longer text on each page. The books measure 8.5 x 5.5 inches when assembled. Each book prints on two 8.5 x 11 inch sheets of cardstock (front and back) or four sheets of copier paper (single sided), and instructions are included for both printing methods.
What you will receive:
- One 22-page PDF file (size 8.5 by 11 inches)
- 5 poetry readers plus assembly instructions
This set of readers includes the following poems:
- After the Winter Rain (Ina Coolbrith)
- Blue-Butterfly Day (Robert Frost)
- Spring in New Hamshire (Claude McKay)
- Spring Thunder (Mark Van Doren)
- At the Spring Dawn (Angelina Weld Grimké)
Please note that the vocabulary in these poetry readers may be above the usual reading comprehension level of many kindergarteners, with the aim of providing early exposure to interesting and challenging poetry.
