Description

Do your students enjoy reading scripts? Could they benefit from practice activities where they are asked to identify the theme of the story? This set of five partner plays is perfect for students who would benefit from targeted activities that work toward building reading fluency and identifying the theme. Plus, with plays that focus on sports, some of your reluctant readers that enjoy sports will be extra motivated to read!

These five partner plays are intended to be used as fluency-building activities that 4th and 5th-grade students can do with a partner. It comes with a BONUS reading comprehension worksheet. After reading each script, students use text clues and background knowledge to answer the first comprehension question for each script. For the second question, students are asked to identify the theme of the story.

These scripts require minimal teacher support, thereby allowing teachers to work with other small groups. For teachers who implement reading centers, these plays are perfect. These scripts are also ideal for parents who are looking for fun at-home reading activities that parents and children can read together. If you have a child who is reluctant to read at home, I encourage you to give these scripts a try!

This resource is available in multiple formats. Each teacher gets to choose the format that best meets his/her students' needs. You will choose between the printable partner plays and the paperless version that uses Google Slides. If you choose the printable option, you will have access to versions with color clip art and blackline clip art. Each script is exactly two pages, making it easy to print them back-to-back on a single page.

This set includes five independent scripts:

  • Basketball Advice (Theme: Having a positive attitude will result in positive outcomes.)
  • The Swim Meet (Theme: Be willing to try new things.)
  • Soccer Lessons (Theme: Making poor choices can lead to negative consequences.)
  • Girls Can Play Hockey, Too! (Theme: Stand up for what you believe in.)
  • An Embarrassing Memory (Theme: Good sportsmanship is just as important as the outcome of the game.)
