Spooky Spanish Legend: El Sombreron

The Spanish Legend: "El Sombreron":*I have also included additional activities that may be used based on this lesson.

• Read an introduction story about the Spanish Spooky Legend "El Sombreron". This will allow your students to read about the background of the legend, "El Sombreron" including his appearance, mischief, and nocturnal serenades. The introduction story is in Spanish and I have included unfamiliar words that are translated into English. Students may read aloud or individually. They may repeat words, to strengthen their pronunciation skills.

• Watch the animated video about the Spanish Legend of "El Sombreron", by Profesor Loco, in Spanish with Spanish subtitles to increase students' comprehension skills. This video is appropriate for all age levels. An additional activity is when I have the students write down unfamiliar words review their meanings and repeat them for pronunciation practice.

• Students may answer the following questions about the Spanish legend "El Sombreron". Students may work individually, in pairs, or within small collaborative learning groups. They may share their answers orally with the class and may elaborate on the questions. Students can also compare their responses to the questions to indicate which ones were explained better. In addition, this activity can be delivered by students going to the whiteboard to provide their answers in writing. In addition, another activity I do is to have my students generate their own set of questions about "El Sombreron". They can compare and contrast this particular legend to others.

At the end of this lesson, there is a short quiz in Spanish that serves as a formative assessment where the students can answer questions with multiple choices or true and false. Please see La Prueba de El Sombreron.
