Description

This is lesson 4 of 6 from the Numeration 1-10 manual. The lesson uses the spindles and spindle boxes.

The Direct Aims are:

The spindles clarify the idea that the symbols represent a certain quantity of separate objects.

To introduce the concept of zero and its symbol.

To reinforce the natural sequence of the numerals.

To show nine as the first group in our decimal system, not ten.

The indirect Aim is:

Unconscious preparation for the decimal and metric systems.

To move closer to abstraction due to the loose quantities (compared with the formed quantities of the rods).

To reinforce the idea that there are no other symbols other than 0-9.

10 is a new level of number.

Math starts with numeration from the numbers 1-10. Through hands-on didactic materials they build on the foundation of numerals to learn about the decimal system, numbers to 100, and the four operations.

In this lesson plan/presentation, you will get:

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
