OVERVIEW

These dictation word and sentence lists are an excellent tool to use as part of a comprehensive structured literacy program. The word lists follow a sequential and cumulative approach that allows you to introduce a series of strategically grouped consonant blends. Each new word list builds off the last, so your students only ever spell concepts they have been explicitly taught. Each grouping of blends comes with a minimum of nine review words, fifteen new focus words, and six sentences. Most groups of blends come with multiple lists, so there are many unique words to support your students’ learning. Word lists are organized into two different formats, so you can pick the version that best suits your needs. Additionally, these word and sentence lists can be used for more than just spelling. They can be provided as decodable text for students to read,  used in games, and more! 

The concepts in this resource, which begin SparkEd Literacy’s Level 2 Scope and Sequence, include:

• Initial Blends 1 (R-Blends): br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr
• Initial Blends 2 (L-Blends): bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl
• Initial Blends 3 (S-Blends & W-Blends): sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, dw, sw, tw
• Final Blends 1 (S-Blends & T-Blends): -sk, -sp, -st, -ct, -ft, -pt, -xt
• Final Blends 2 (L-Blends): -ld, -lf, -lk, -lp, -lt
• Final Blends 3 (M-Blends & N-Blends): -mp, -nd, -nch, -nt
• Initial Three-Letter Blends:  scr, shr, spl, spr, squ, thr

SparkEd Literacy’s Growing Level 2 Scope and Sequence

SparkEd Literacy’s Growing Level 2 Scope outlines the specific progression we follow when introducing students to consonant blends. The scope and sequence also shows the progression we follow when teaching “learned words” (high-frequency words that include one or more parts that are irregular or that students have not yet explicitly learned). The word and sentence lists within this resource follow this progression.

SparkEd Literacy’s Level 1 Scope and Sequence

SparkEd Literacy’s Level 1 Scope and Sequence is also included within this resource as a quick reference. This scope and sequence shows all of 31 concepts we recommend teaching students prior to introducing them to consonant blends. The sequence covers consonants, short vowels, and consonant digraphs sh, th, ch, and wh. Please note that because our Level 1 sequence introduces common consonant digraphs, you will see words with consonant digraphs in
this consonant blend resource. If you teach your students consonant blends before teaching them consonant digraphs, it is easy enough to skip the words containing digraphs within our lists and just use words with consonant blends.
