Description

Space Spinoffs: NASA in Your Life

NEW UPDATED 2023!

In this lesson, students will see that many of the items used in their lives today are a product from technology created for the space program. Students will learn which popular items are space spinoffs and the NASA technology that inspired them.

For example, students may be surprised to find out that the wireless headset they use to play their games was created from technology that allowed Neil Armstrong to say 'One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind" when he took his 1st steps on the Moon, and that cosmetics have been improved because of 3-d mapping techniques used for the Moon.

This lesson includes:

(both color & black/white copies are provided)

---30 space spinoff cards (6 of which are not real spinoffs...can you guess which are fake? Answers are provided.)

---Spinoff coloring page that can be used before the activity to see how many items they use or just for fun.

---Matching activity page connecting spinoffs to the NASA technology that inspired them. This can be used for review/assessment or just for fun!

---Interactive NASA Link to explore space spinoffs that are used in the home and in everyday life. Can be used as a teacher-led activity or in stations.

---Links to NASA videos about space spinoffs.
