I created this product because I really needed to differentiate my sight word practice for my students and wanted them at a literacy center. My problem was that the students couldn't always read the dang word, so they just copied the letters (waste of time!). I made sure that every word is read to the kids with instructions (Hooray BOOM cards!) I am working on making these cards for all the FRY words!

What is Sound to Text Spelling in a nutshell?

It is a way for students to make deep connections about their spelling so that those words transfer into the child's writing and reading. If you read the steps above, you can see that the child is analyzing the word, making kinesthetic connections, and working with the word in many ways like tapping the sounds. The kids do NOT spell letter by letter, but instead spell by sound segments in the word. Example: chat would be ch/a/t (3 sounds of 4 letters). Kids will develop a deeper phonics awareness. This is a great opportunity to teach that many words play by rules, but not all of them especially sight words! There is a whole book on this way of teaching spelling to learn more!
