Description
Students must using Completing the Squares to solve quadratic equations. May also be used to practice using the square root property to solve quadratics. There are 2 versions of this activity. 14 equations for each set.
Level 1: All solutions are integers, all equations (after completing the squares) will be set equal to a perfect square.
Level 2: Solutions are rational (fractions) or irrational (with no perfect square roots). So equations (after completing the squares) will be set equal to a perfect square fraction (like 9/4) or non-perfect squares (like 10)
Lots of ways to use this activity. Here are 2 options:
Sort/Matching Activity
This is a 3 part sort. Students are given a set of equations, squares, and solutions. They must work the problems and match with the square and the solution set.
Interactive Bulletin Board Idea:
Great for bell work. Place the solutions (or perfect squares) on your blackboard. Give the students (individually or in pairs) an equation to work. They place the equations under the correct answer. This takes about 10 minutes, and allows you to see which students need more help.
This activity is designed for differentiated instruction. Ideas included on the direction page.
