What educators are saying

This resource is fantastic for discussing thinking vs. saying and why. It allowed for perspective taking on why saying something may impact another person.
So easy to print the craft and use the story on my iPad to go over this concept with my students. Exactly what I needed! Simple, very relevant situations. Awesome resource!

Description

This social emotional learning and social skills lesson on thought bubble vs talking bubble (social filter) will help students understand what thoughts are inappropriate to say out loud and should stay in their thought bubble and which thoughts are appropriate to say out loud and can go in their talking bubble. This is important because saying negative words/phrases out loud can hurt other people. Students need to understand that their feelings and thoughts about others are okay, but sometimes those feelings/thoughts need to stay in their thought bubble so they won’t hurt other people.

What is this?

Let’s teach students about the their social filter. This is simply done through an engaging social story game,  THREE related printable activities, a transition to close the lesson, an extended learning “idea” for that week and “The Best Of Me” awards.

Should I look at the preview above?

YES! YES! YES! See preview for a better look at this product (you might not even have to read the rest after you see the preview but I would love it if you did). Everything included is mentioned in the preview above.

Content:

What Is a social story game?

The social story game contains a 25-page story that will help students practice distinguishing between which words should go in a thought bubble vs a talking bubble. Students will take turns answering the questions on each page. The story is unique because it has situations for students to put “themselves” as the characters to help them make their own positive choices. Scenarios may include situations at school, home and in public places.

What are the printable activity sheets?

  1. The first activity is a small social story book that students will cut apart, color and staple back together .
  2. The second activity is an award/coloring activity
  3. The third activity is a cut/paste activity where students sort thoughts that would go in a thought bubble vs a talking bubble.

⭐️Students will need markers/colored pencils/crayons, a scissors and glue stick to complete these activities.

What is the transition?

A simple question students will answer to help them transition smoothly to the next activity. This also should be used as DATA to see if students understood the lesson.

What is an extended learning idea?

A simple “idea” on how to build on this lesson. This is done through modeling, teacher acknowledgement and praise.

How should I teach this?

  1. Read the social story game on a DIGITAL DEVICE used as PDF or you can print it out. Students will take turns answering the questions. Use the questions on each page to expand on the lesson depending on the level of your students.
  2. Have students complete the  printable activity(s)
  3. Complete the transition activity
  4. Use the extended learning ”idea” for the rest of the week up to a year to build on this lesson.
  5. Hand out "The Best Of Me" Awards throughout the week/year when you see students giving "The Best Of Me"

Let's answer some more questions:

Is it easy to use?

This activity is simple, effective and easy to follow! I am a huge fan of simple because I think it does the trick most of the time while keeping the engagement, focus and attention!

Who can learn from this?

This lesson is appropriate to use with primary grade levels K-2nd.

Do I teach this in a group setting?

You can teach this in a large group, small group or to individual students

How much prep do I need to do?

Not much! Just printing the activity sheets!

What research supports this?

This is research based and aligned with CASEL’s 5 Areas of Core Competence in Social Emotional Learning.

Is there a digital version?

Similar version of this game on Boom Learning - Coming Soon!

What type of learners is it used for?

ALL LEARNERS

  • In-Person through Digital PDFs and printables
  • Distant learning through PDFS and sending home activity sheets
  • Homeschool (while replacing the teacher role with the “homeschool teacher” role)

Does it come in black and white?

This lesson comes in color. It is important for students to see diversity in the scenarios and color allows this. I recommend viewing it as a PDF or printing in color.  However, the printable activities DO come in black & white.
