All of us have many different kinds of relationships with different people. Our relationship with family differs from our relationship with friends, coworkers, neighbors, as well as people we casually engage with as we go about our daily lives. For some students with special needs the distinctions must be pointed out and taught. Otherwise misunderstandings can lead to a number of negative social consequences, some of which can be serious. The following materials are designed to help teach students to identify different kinds of relationships and the appropriate behaviors expected at each level. This is only a guide and teachers must help students eventually learn to analyze each situation as to body language, verbal expressions, and social norms. It is a place to start when helping students with special needs cope with the complexities of the abstract topic of relationships that even typical peers often struggle to fully understand in our changing social environment.

Most young people have thoughts and feelings about wanting to be close to someone, maybe having a girlfriend or boyfriend or maybe even someday finding a life partner and getting married. These thoughts and feelings are okay but some students require direct instruction to learn about the conditions under which is it appropriate and not appropriate to act on these thoughts and feelings. These materials are designed to assist students in understanding these abstract social norms and navigating the complexities of different types of relationships. These resources provide explicit social skills instruction targeted to teach essential perspective taking skills. When students understand that our behaviors affect how other people think and feel about us and if they feel comfortable and think we are safe and okay to be around, we can increase the likelihood of positive relationship outcomes and avoid negative social consequences. In addition, these materials focus on teaching students the importance of effective communication, attending to the body language of others as well as always respecting the other person’s feelings and personal space needs.

This is what I needed to help my life skills students to visualize and conceptualize the different levels of relationships and what other people think when you act unexpectedly. A nice supplement to the curriculum I already have (which didn't have enough visuals for my students).

Social Narratives (also known as Social Stories) are an evidenced based intervention used to teach an array of social skills by describing social situations for learners in detail, highlighting relevant cues, explaining the thoughts and feelings of others as well as offering examples of behavioral expectations and appropriate responding. Social Stories are a proactive intervention that should be presented to the student in a calm and comfortable environment and should be repeatedly read to or with the student using a positive tone until the student demonstrates acquisition of the targeted skills. Students should never be forced to read or review a social story as a consequence for inappropriate behavior.
