Why Use a Content-Based System?

Current research suggests that a content-based approach to vocabulary and spelling offers greater promise for student learning than conventional practices. Consider these findings:

✔ Multiple exposures to vocabulary items are important.

✔ Vocabulary words should be those that the learner will find useful in many contexts.

✔ Explicit instruction of words and their meanings increases the likelihood that young children will understand and remember the meanings of new words.

✔ Vocabulary impacts reading comprehension.

✔ Current teaching practices ignore the direct teaching of vocabulary.

✔ Learning vocabulary from context is not effective for poor readers.

✔ Poor readers are not exposed to challenging language.

✔ Repetition improves vocabulary acquisition.
