Are you struggling with student’s using slurs? Are you hearing the N-word said out in your hallways? Not sure how to handle a student culture of Harmful Language?
This presentation will guide a classroom discussion on Slurs and Other Harmful Language and why it is important that we avoid using those terms. This is meant to be a discussion between students and the School Counselor/School Social Worker/Teacher, not a lecture.
Slurs discussed cover the areas of Race, Disability, and LGBTQ+.
Links to three YouTube videos are include. The videos are used to give historical and cultural uses of slurs and explanations of why they are considered offensive.
This can be a very difficult and sensitive topic for students. Students might respond in ways that might appear disrespectful, such as giggling at examples. Presenters should be able to calmly try to give background on the examples given. Presenters should also always be aware of their own biases before beginning a dialog on this topic.
