Overview of PowerPoint:

• Begins with a story about a girl who often overreacts to problems. When she experiences an actual big problem, people don't come to help her.
• Students learn the definition of overreacting and that there are different sizes of problems and reactions.
• Overreacting can drive people away.
• Students learn common reasons people overreact. They might feel tired or hungry, they might lack self-calming skills, or something bigger underneath might be bothering them.
• Strategies are discussed to learn not to overreact:
  • BEFORE: You can prepare to not overreact by doing things like eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and moderating screen time. You can also learn to identify triggers.
  • DURING: Strong emotions cloud your judgment, so it is best to use self-calming strategies until your emotions settle.
  • AFTER: After a reaction, you should ask yourself questions to evaluate how you did, such as, "Did my reaction match my problem size?" "Is something else bothering me? "Did my reaction drive people away?"

• Review: Students answer interactive questions to help the girl in the story learn to not overreact.
