What educators are saying

I used as a supplement and refresher for Size of the Problem concept. Love the no-prep piece. Also like that it includes activity portion and had students come up to touch board to engage physically. Also, even though my students are older it did not seem to affect the engagement.
Engaging lesson to help students examine the sizes of problems and appropriate responses to the problems.

Overview of PowerPoint:

  • Begins with a story about a girl who often overreacts to problems. When she experiences an actual big problem, people don't come to help her.
  • Students learn the definition of overreacting and that there are different sizes of problems and reactions.
  • Overreacting can drive people away.
  • Students learn common reasons people overreact. They might feel tired or hungry, they might lack self-calming skills, or something bigger underneath might be bothering them.
  • Strategies are discussed to learn not to overreact:
    • BEFORE: You can prepare to not overreact by doing things like eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and moderating screen time. You can also learn to identify triggers.
    • DURING: Strong emotions cloud your judgment, so it is best to use self-calming strategies until your emotions settle.
    • AFTER: After a reaction, you should ask yourself questions to evaluate how you did, such as, "Did my reaction match my problem size?" "Is something else bothering me? "Did my reaction drive people away?"

  • Review: Students answer interactive questions to help the girl in the story learn to not overreact.

This lesson includes animations, quiz questions, and stories to keep your students engaged!

Inspired by my preschooler, who could really use some help with identifying the size of the problem... :)

Thanks,

Eve

Note to Teachers:
