What educators are saying

I was excited to finally find a resource for my older special education students! Most are targeted for younger students, and this one is great!
I used these as warm-up prompts for class. Great data collection tool for students with "scenario" goals.

Description

This size of the problem activity includes 2 different engaging lessons, suggestions for modification, and covers several different types of situations. Mainly focused on the size of a problem and size of the reaction, you will also find perspective-taking, empathy, and opportunities to discuss coping skills. This activity features a 20 questions inspired add-on as well, to increase difficulty and have students look at the concept more depth - because players need to have a deep understanding to play this add-on, it may not be suitable for all students, and it has not been factored into the price - meaning you get the add-on basically for free! Players will sort and discuss 48 prompt cards, and check reverse understanding by trying to learn details of a problem to make their best guess of what size it is. Struggling to keep the interest of my 8th grade boys, these lessons have been very engaging and just what we both needed!

Download includes the following across 2-4+ sessions:

•Prompt Cards for Sorting and Discussion (48 in color, 48 in BW)

•Sorting Mountain Mats (1 in color, 1 in BW)

•10 Questions Tip Cards (9 in color, 9 in BW: 20 questions-inspired)

•18 Size of the Problem/Reaction Reference Cards (9 in color, 9 in BW)

•Detailed Lesson Plans with Directions/Suggestions

Still not sure if it's for you? Check out my blog post here where I go into detail about how the lesson works!

These lessons are intended for use with 4th-8th grade, and includes a few prompt cards that may be removed for 4th grade as they discuss higher concepts. I hope you enjoy this download as much as myself and my students have!

This product is part of a bundle:Size of the Problem Bundle 4th-5th

What is size of the problem? Size of the problem breaks down problems and reactions into different sizes. Doing so helps students identify if their reaction and problem size match, as well as identify which problems should warrant which reactions. This improves the student's ability to choose appropriate reactions and realize that some problems may actually not be as big of a deal as they seem - with room for consideration. This is particularly helpful for students needing help with emotional regulation, and those who are more successful when learning through visuals. The concept of size of the problem can be done in different ways, but for this download it includes 4 sizes: no problem, little problem, medium problem, and big problem. The numbers given on reference cards also allow for in-between sizes you can decide/discuss with your students. There are also 4 reaction sizes to match: no reaction, little reaction, medium reaction, and big reaction.
