What educators are saying

Perfect mini-unit for my 6th graders! Everything I needed to teach and assign six-word memoirs successfully. Thank you!
I used this as a final for a freshman experience course. It was well received, and my student's answers were thoughtful and well done. Thank you for designing such an engaging activity.

Description

This was a great hit with my students! It was the most common answer for the question "What was your favorite project this year?" on my students' end-of-the-year class evaluations.

This includes a PowerPoint that explains (and gives a bunch of examples) of Six Word Memoirs, a concept developed by Larry Smith. Students essentially write their own six word memoir answering the question "Who am I?" or "If I had exactly six words to define my life, what would they be?" They create a piece of art (with their Six Word Memoir integrated into it) and I have them present them at the end. My students LOVED this assignment and I was amazed by the depth and creativity of their responses. A really fun activity! I put them up all over the walls of my classroom and left them up all semester (teachers, parents, and other students loved coming in and looking at them). I used it with high school students, but it can be adapted to many different ages!

There is also a link to a TED Talk about Six Word Memoirs and an article that we read together in class.

See my Memoir/ Nonfiction unit (my best-selling product!) for the entire unit that goes with this activity.
