What educators are saying

Both the math mysteries and the reading mysteries are totally worth it. As far as engagement, my kids prefer the math, but I would still buy both either way! I love all of Mrs. J's Resources.

Description

Simplifying (Reducing) Fractions will be so much fun with this Math Mystery Activity, 'The Case of The Shogun's Sword.' Students will find themselves in Japan during the year 1850, helping the Shogun solve who switched his precious sword. It's a great way to get lots of practice in simplifying (reducing) fractions to the lowest terms. 3rd Grade Edition (or the easiest version in this set).

Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Slides option provided within your download.

Optional video hook included for introducing the case! (Check it out in the preview section)

BONUS: Ending video added to wrap up the case!

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are FIVE clues to crack to solve who switched the Shogun's Sword:

  • Clue 1 - Simplifying/Reducing Fractions
  • Clue 2 - Simplifying/Reducing Fractions
  • Clue 3 - Simplifying/Reducing Fractions
  • Clue 4 - Simplifying/Reducing Fractions
  • Clue 5 - Simplifying/Reducing Fractions

PLEASE NOTE - In this 3rd-grade version, the denominators of simplified answers are mainly 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. A few fractions are given in the already reduced form to help give students the confidence and ability to look at a fraction and determine whether it already is in its simplest form (these fractions may have denominators of 7/9).

You will also receive teacher instructions, a story, asuspect list, suspect declaration sheet, editable suspect list, answer sheets, and printable awards. A GLOSSARY page is included at the very end.

Thank you, and enjoy!
