Description
Simplify Algebraic Expressions Bundle - Five (5) products in one: PowerPoint Lesson, Practice Worksheet, Differentiated Scribb Notes, Walk-About activity, and cut-and-paste matching activities (includes three differentiated cut-and-paste activities with #2 and #3 in an alternate worksheet format).
This bundle includes my 15-page PowerPoint Lesson that covers equations vs. expressions, terms, like terms, coefficients, constants, combining like terms, simplifying using distributive property and simplifying using both distributive property and combining like terms. Student "Your Turn" slides allow students to work individually or in small groups to master each concept before moving on.
The practice worksheet is designed to help students practice simplifying algebraic expressions using distributive property and like terms. The parts of an algebraic expressions are listed in table form at the top of the worksheet for student reference. Students then practice identifying terms, like terms, coefficients, and constants before moving on to simplifying expressions using distributive property and combining like terms. The worksheet would function as a homework assignment, class practice (individually, with partners, or in a small group), or an assessment. Answer key is provided.
Two pages of notes for students to scribble, color, doodle, draw or shade covering expressions, equations, terms, like terms, coefficients, constants, combining like terms, and distributing with like terms, with examples, offered in three different formats to help make differentiation easier. You can give students the full notes and allow them to color, scribble, shade, doodle, and draw on them; a second option is a fill-in the blanks note page; or use the third option which just has the titles to allow you to customize your own definitions and examples.
The Walk-About is a great way to get students out of their seats and engaged in simplifying algebraic expressions using distributive property and combining like terms. This is a more advanced activity that includes rational numbers and longer expressions making it great as a beginning of year refresher or end of year review.
Post the cards around the room and have student rotate to each โstationโ to solve one problem and write the clue word on their paper. Students can work in whatever order they want, so it is easy to spread them out across the room. Each card is numbered in the upper left star. Posting one or two of the cards in unusual places also adds to the excitement as they search for the hidden station.
This fun cut-and-paste partner activity helps students with simplifying algebraic expressions using like terms and distributive property. There are three levels of the cut-and-paste worksheet to help you easily differentiate for students, plus by special request activities 2 and 3 have been combined into a second worksheet. Each one has ten expressions need to be simplified and matched to the correct expression. My students loved this activity. We glued the expressions on construction paper. Some teams got very creative on their final product drawing two sets of ten different polygons and matching them that way or drawing unique "borders" or pictures around their matches. I suggest having students draw lines connecting the two to keep the project neat and easier to read and grade.
