Simple Machines Project {Science, Writing, and Art}

Time Travel Adventure: This differentiated science and writing project is a fun and meaningful way to assess student understanding of simple machines. In this project, students will create a time travel machine with at least three simple machines. Students will draw the machine, label the parts, and write about a time they would like to travel back (or forward) to. Some students may write about a personal experience they’d like to return to, while others may decide to travel to the future! This is a wonderful opportunity to integrate writing with science.

You can finish this activity in one to three class periods, depending on your available time. I have included a suggested lesson plan sequence for two days. Each student begins with a planning page. Completing the planning page will help students do the design work of creating their time machine and will allow you to assess understanding before beginning the final project.
