Description

If you are doing distance learning, this geometry investigation is perfect for exploring the "Angle Angle Triangle Similarity Postulate (AA)." Students ultimately come to understand that when two angles of one triangle are congruent to two corresponding angles of another triangle, then the corresponding side lengths are proportional. Thus, the triangles are similar. If you want to stick with the "Angle Angle Angle Triangle Similarity Postulate (AAA)" then you can emphasize to students that when all three corresponding angles are congruent, the corresponding side lengths are proportional. And therefore, the triangles are similar.

The nice thing about this activity is that it allows students to focus on the larger concept of similarity without getting bogged down or confused with the minutia, like having students measure angles and side measurements. There is a time and place for those skills, but we're trying to develop the larger concept. Students are able to drag the Vertices to change the angle measurements or side lengths. The software updates the measurements instantly. Excellent for visual learners.

Go deeper than congruent triangles and develop the concept of similar triangles and proportionality with your students.

Perfect for using on Google Classroom, Pair Deck, and/or other digital platforms.

Angles are taken to angles of the same measure.
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
