Sight Word Superstars: Building Fry List Fluency

Are your students still trying to sound out their sight words? Would you like a systematic way to make sure your students are able to read their sight words fluently?

How does it work?
I broke each Fry 100 into lists of 20 high-frequency words. I copy each level of Fry words on a different color of Astrobrights paper to make it easier on myself and so the kids can easily see their progress. I consider my 1st graders fluent if they can read a list in under 20 seconds. You may want to adjust your time goal based on the age or ability of your students. When a student meets their fluency goal on a list, I award them a sticker for their star. Once their star has all five stickers, the class applauds them and the star is sent home with the included certificate (I color code these, too.) The students actually beg to be tested and are so proud when they graduate to a new star color!

When do you find time?
❤️During guided reading, students practice reading their list with their whisper phone while they are waiting for their turn with me.
❤️Ask parent volunteers! My parents love working with the students in such a meaningful way.
