Are you like me in that you love collecting data on your kids? I love and look forward to see their growth!

As I teach sight words, I like to frequently assess their retention. I will usually assess their reading of these words at the beginning and end of each quarter.

What's included:

  • Student copy of the words
  • Individual tracking sheet-highlight words read-in PDF and Power Point
  • Excel spreadsheet for tracking your students' reading of the sight words AND writing sight words
  • Writing assessment sheets for students
  • Flashcard generator for groups of 6 students; 4 words at a time-in both PDF and Power Point files
  • Editable group tracking sheet to add names of kids in the group and sight words taught

What you will do is give the student a copy of the words. I would laminate the student copy for reuse. As they (individual students) read the words, I use different color highlighter (not included) each time I assess so I can look at patterns and see what word(s) need more instruction. Teacher data sheet is included. You add the date and highlight with the color highlighter you used during the assessment.

Also included is an Excel spreadsheet that you can track the reading of the word list. This will give you a view of your class and you will easily see what sight words you need to teach whole, small, or individually.. Once you enter the data, if the student read the word correctly the cell will turn green, if not it will be red. This will make it easy to see your class at a glance.

Another feature of this product is an editable sheet for you to use with a small group in teaching sight words. As you teach a sight word to your small group, you will say the sight word and have them write them on paper or on a white board (not included). If they write it correctly, you make a check in the box below their name. After five consecutive times (on different days) the student knows it. You might be interested in my Teaching a Sight word product for all the ways you can teach it.

Lastly, I have included both an Excel spreadsheet and a recording sheet if you want to assess the whole class on their writing of the sight words you have taught. It is the same way to enter the data for writing as for the reading of the sight words. You will probably want to give the writing of the words over multiple days depending on your class. The recording sheet is numbered for your convenience. It is not mandatory that the kids spell these words, but they will use them in their writing. If they can write them, they can read them.

This also comes with a flashcard maker for up to 6 kids. This is ideal for small groups. There are 2 files; a PDF and a PowerPoint. The PDF allows you to create sets of 4 words for up to six kids at a time. Let’s say you taught the following words to a group of 6; get, go, can, but. You enter the words in on the template and it will populate the other sets. You can also add a name to each set of four. This way kids will always know which ones are theirs. You can add a ring, or I love this idea of individual file boxes found here on Amazon. These come with dividers that you can section as “New Words”, “Words to Practice”, and “Mastered”. They are portable so kids can transport them back and forth from school. I love it! If you choose to use the PowerPoint, you can add your own words and fonts to individualize. Both files are standard 3 x 5 index card size.

This product will no doubt help you to evaluate your students' growth and your instruction. This will provide valuable data to utilize with parents and data meetings.

Great for tutors as well as kindergarten teachers!
