What educators are saying

Figurative language is definitely a tough one for my 5th graders! I love this resource as a way to teach, review, spiraling, and reteach. Thank you so much!
Great addition to my figurative language lesson. My students loved this activity. I used the activities in centers and they really worked well.

    Description

With this Figurative language passages with short stories bundle, you can teach your 4th & 5th-grade students about a variety of figures of speech styles. This product has a variety of resources, including posters, a figurative language game, and passages to practice and use as an assessment grade or for a quiz. There are 6 short stories, humorous stories, figures of speech worksheets, & more low-prep resources inside.

    INCLUDED INSIDE:

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE TASK CARDS & POSTERS:

8 styles of figurative language with these task cards and posters. Your students will love learning about unique styles of writing with this activity. You can print and display the posters in your classroom.

    Posters include:

    ✿Simile

    ✿Metaphor

    ✿Alliteration

    ✿Hyperbole

    ✿Idiom

    ✿Personification

    ✿Imagery

    ✿Onomatopoeia

Your students can practice their knowledge of each style with the 32 task cards in the activities pack. The task cards have 2 different options for the teacher to use. The first set of task cards contains multiple-choice, and in the other set, the student will have to identify the style of language used. The task cards are similar but are great for higher-level thinking. The student will also have to explain what the figurative language style means to the reader. Answer keys for the task cards are included in the packet. Use the task cards in centers, small group practice, or in sheet protectors and a marker. Students can also have fun quizzing each other using the cards.

    FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FLIPBOOK ACTIVITY

Learning new vocabulary words for students can be challenging. The Figurative Language Flipbook is an easy and fun way for students to learn new words. This flipbook needs to be printed and cut.

The student will write the definition and give an example of each figurative language style. The student can glue in a composition notebook for easy reference of each style throughout the school year. A rubric is included in the teacher's packet to grade the flip book activity.

    FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES

6 reading comprehension passages that focus on a style of figurative language in each passage. You will be able to have your readers focus on the following: Similes, Metaphors, Idioms, Hyperbole, Personification, Alliteration & Onomatopoeia.

You can use the reading passages to show your readers examples of each writing style and get a comprehension grade. Each passage has, at minimum, an example of each style per paragraph. The passages are silly made-up stories to keep your student engaged while reading and notice each of the figurative language styles.

You can use this resource in a small group, tutoring, and independent work. One way to see if your readers understand each of the reading styles is to have them highlight the similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperboles, personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia examples they find in the text.

This packet contains multiple-choice questions for you to challenge your readers. Each passage includes 7-8 comprehension questions.
