About This Resource:

  • These word family mats are the perfect small group, word work, or independent center activity for spring!
  • Print all mats or just the short vowels you are currently working on.
  • Provide children with letters or other manipulatives to build their words (I recommend using plastic Easter eggs -- directions are below).
  • Have children record the words they create for each vowel sound on their word family mats.
  • Most word families are CVC with a few CVCC included.

This Resource Includes:

  • 10 different short vowel word family mats; 2 mats for each vowel

  1. Short a: -at, -am, -an,
  2. Short a: -ad, -ap, -ag
  3. Short e: -et, -ed, -en,
  4. Short e: -ell, -eck, -est
  5. Short i: -it, -in, -ig,
  6. Short i: -ip, -ill, -ick
  7. Short o: -ot, -og, -op,
  8. Short o: -ob, -ock, -od
  9. Short u: -ug, -ut, -un,
  10. Short u: -up, -uck, -ump

Directions for Use:

  • Fill a basket with plastic Easter eggs.
  • Write the word ending on one side of the egg, and a variety of consonants on the other side of the egg.
  • For example, you may write "at" on the right side of the egg and write the letters "c, m, r, p, s, h, b" on the left side of the egg. When the 2 parts of the egg are snapped together, they should be able to be rotated to make the following words: cat, mat, rat, pat, sat, hat, bat.
  • The eggs should make a variety of words with the same ending and different beginning sounds when rotated.
  • Give children their word family eggs and the corresponding word family mat.
  • Allow them to twist their eggs and record the various words they create under each word family chick.
  • This makes an excellent small group, word work, or independent center activity.
  • PS: Hand sanitizer works great for cleaning off the permanent marker if you make a mistake or want to reuse the eggs for a different activity. :)
