Description

Cuca’s Conundrums Episode Sixteen: La Upstairs Maid Indentured, Undocumented & Cute! As the Depression makes it hard to find work, especially for undocumented, limited English speaking people, Cuca is indentured to work as a house maid and nanny for Dora’s old rival, Gloria, who married a rich lawyer in Pasadena. The Lawyer asks Cuca to organize a Mexican banquet for his rich Latino Entertainer Clients. She makes friends with the Mexican cook, chauffeur, his pal, pot-smoking Jesse and her employer’s gin-drinking mother, when they go to a Christmas Eve Dance Contest at the American Legion Hall in El Monte.

These cuentos, stories about thinking in two cultures, speaking in two languages and adapting to everyday bicultural communication interactions with grace, compassion and humor, came from my family, friends and neighbor’s memories and conversations. Cherish them. They are part of our multicultural community’s herencia, inheritance.
