What educators are saying

My students really get a lot out of mentor texts. I liked that there were some slightly longer texts in this bundle as well as shorter ones to add variety.
I have been wanting to use mentor texts in my class for a long time. This made it easy to do so. The texts are short and engaging.

Description

Short Mentor Texts for Middle & High School: Showing, not telling, is important not only for effective writing, but also for effective writing instruction. Mentor sentences and longer mentor texts are perfect for this, as they provide exemplars that students can use to examine author craft. Once they identify what good writers do, they will imitate the techniques in their own writing. These mentor texts, then, can be used to build skills for both close reading and writing. Be sure to check the preview for more detail on how to use this resource!

In this zip file, you will find teacher tips for planning and organizing, as well as short mentor texts for examining:

  • Sentence types and sentence structure, as well as other elements of good writing

  • The elements of effective descriptive and narrative writing

  • Examples of effective expository and opinion writing

  • Answer keys for each exercise

This product is designed to match the exercises in my WRITER'S NOTEBOOK, but can be used on their own for any writing instruction that you do.

Want to bundle up and save some money? The Mentor Texts are available in my Writer's Workshop Bundle.

** One of the best places to find mentor passages is in your students' novels: this product can help you teach skills and standards during independent reading: Activities for Independent Reading (it's also in the workshop bundle).
