Description

Restate the question! Cite the evidence! Show the proof and explain it in a written response! These all need to be explicitly taught. This printable and digital resource will show you how in concise steps.

We expect students to be able to write a constructed response by third grade, so we have to begin teaching them how to do so before they get to third grade. The RACE strategy (restate the question, answer the question, cite evidence, and explain/extend your response/thinking) is a great way to guide and encourage students to write thorough and meaningful reading responses.

This resource shows how to teach the RACE strategy to primary students. It includes:

  • RACE posters
  • anchor charts {for RACE, citing evidence, and explaining your answer and restate, answer, cite and extend}
  • small RACE reminder cards for students
  • oral and written practice with restating the question,
  • cut and paste restate and answer
  • written practice of restate and answer
  • 6 short texts to practice restate, answer and cite.
  • 6 generic response sheets to practice RACE
