My students loved this activity! $1000 to spend made them happy and it was a fun way to teach about sales tax in a real-world context. Overall - great!
Description
Students are awarded and imaginary $1000 to go gift shopping for their friends and families! They must buy presents for at least 10 people and cannot spend over $1000. Pictures of gifts (with their prices) are cut out of actual store flyers and collected. Extra credit is awarded to those few that manage to spend exactly $1000! To make it more challenging, they must only purchase gifts with $ .01 through $.99 included in the prices. (No whole dollar gifts allowed) When they are done "shopping" they make a poster, or similar project, to display all of their gifts.
Purchasing this project gives you two for the price of one! Everything included comes in two forms. One version allows students to shop without having to apply sales tax. The other over version makes calculating sales tax a requirement. The two levels is a great way to differentiate either within one classroom or use between different math class levels.
Each version contains four pages:
Pages 1 & 2: (run back to back)
*Introduction page giving students the background on the project
*Explanation of rubric for students to refer to.
Page 3:
*Table for student to record gift selections, before taping to the back of completed poster.
Page 4: (2 available per page)
*Rubric for the teacher to use when grading.
Students LOVE the hands on, individual choices, this project allows for and get really into it. This is a great activity to do during that week before winter break. All you'll need to collect in advance is some store flyers (such as Best Buy, Target, etc.) I often ask students to bring them in the week before the project for a few bonus points.
Each year I do this, I show a few examples of prior projects for students to view in advance. It is a great way to get those creative juices going! I am always blown away with some of the projects I end up with. To allow time for this effort I usually work in class on the "shopping" and trying to spend exactly $1000 the week before break. For myself, the project is usually due when returning back from break.
