Shapes songs and chants

This is a PPT file that is a combination of 2 files I created. 2-d shapes set to the tune of common kids songs, complete with audio files, and 3-d shape chants.

These chants and songs are simple to learn but teach the required descriptive vocabulary of vertex,vertices, straight sides, curved sides, and face for each shape.

If you have a projector you can have a student follow the print with a pointer as the song is sung. Students can use the pointer to point to and count sides and vertices.

when I used these in the classroom I also put the chants on sentence strips and made them into a print awareness center so students were practicing literacy and math together. The chant would be in the chart and students would match the words of a 2nd copy that had been cut into words.

I allow early finishers to practice penmanship by copying the poem we are studying in their best handwriting. For parent involvement I usually send a copy of the slide we are working on home in the students take home folder so they can practice at home.

Anytime we transition I will begin the chant for the shape of the week and by the time all students have transitioned we have all practiced singing the chant two or three times.

These align to common core standards for Kindergarten.

Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres).
� K.G.1. Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes.
� K.G.2. Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
� K.G.3. Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, �flat�) or three-dimensional (�solid�).
Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes.
� K.G.4. Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/�corners�) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).

Keep in mind when using these they can also align to several Language art standards for speaking and listening, reading informational texts, vocabulary, analyzing the authors purpose and print awareness. Because it is music, song, visual and tech using these is developmentally appropriate practices, ESOL strategies for ELL's and even accommodations for some ESE students.

I also used it with the VPK class I taught over the summer.

If you use shapes for your calendar you can teach the songs for the shapes you use that month. I usually ask riddles to test for understanding such as "which shape has 0 vertices?" I refer them to the shape songs for students who have difficulty. By the time we reach the chapter in the math series on shapes my students are ready to skip the chapter and take the test.
