Description

Practice, review, or reinforce fractions concepts with this fun St. Patrick’s Day themed “Shamrock Fraction Frame.” Depth & Complexity icons are used within this resource to elevate thinking. The frames work as learning mats in many different formats so students can organize and conceptualize their fraction representations visually. They represent fractions four different ways. Put these into a dry-erase pocket for multiple uses! These can be used with whole group instruction, small groups, or centers. I used it as a collaborative interactive frame, where groups of four each complete one part of the shamrock and then rotate it through the rest of the group. They check the work of their peers once it returns to them. See my video attached for an example!

The GATE depth and complexity prompt icons can be used in the frames, and one is already created for print-and-go ease of use.  Three fractions templates are provided, as well as a blank template so that you can customize each frame with specific fractions.  Product and printing tips provided! Enjoy!

  • This can be printed in grayscale (B&W) on color or white paper. I recommend AstroBright or Pastel paper.
  • There are two template options to fit the needs of different learners:
    • One template has the shapes and lines in each section.
    • One template has an open format for students to create the representations themselves.

  • Three different fractions are included, as well as a blank template for other fractions to be written in the center shamrock.
  • This works well in centers or in groups of 4: Each students gets a different fraction in a dry-erase pocket and completes one representation. Then everyone rotates the paper to the left, and the next person completes a representation. When the papers get back to the original student, they check the work of their peers and make any necessary edits.
  • Consider showing two or three completed pages together to allow students the opportunity to compare the fractions (greater than, less than, equivalent, sequential order, etc.).
  • Students could cut out the shamrock and glue it on color construction paper, or the whole page could be glued on color construction paper.
  • Print out or use the "Prompts of Depth & Complexity" reference page for students to strengthen their understanding.
  • Find more Depth & Complexity frames and Prompts (printable, digital, and editable) in my TPT Store!

Understand a fraction 1/𝘣 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into 𝘣 equal parts; understand a fraction 𝘢/𝑏 as the quantity formed by 𝘢 parts of size 1/𝘣.
Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
Represent a fraction 1/𝘣 on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into 𝘣 equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/𝘣 and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/𝘣 on the number line.
Represent a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 on a number line diagram by marking off 𝘢 lengths 1/𝘣 from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size 𝘢/𝘣 and that its endpoint locates the number 𝘢/𝘣 on the number line.
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
