Description

Even middle grade students know what words mean but are unaware of tone and context and how writers choose specific words to elicit that meaning. This activity begins the journey to deepen student understanding of why they choose specific words in contexts that they are familiar with - why do they use slang words, but when adults use the same words they often sound weird?

This has been a great exercise for upper elementary through early high school grades, for sponge activity, or as part of a unit on author word choice.
