Description

Practice sentence structure and punctuation rules with this hands-on grammar activity. Do you want students to remember punctuation rules with simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences—and apply those ideas to their writing? This sentence structure download will help meet language standards.

Students will "build" sentences with pre-made clauses practicing compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.

Included in this sentence structure activity:

Powerpoint, editable with clauses. 40 pre-made clauses. Students build sentences out of independent and dependent clauses and add punctuation. I use sticky notes for punctuation and conjunctions, and I often glue the clauses on wood pieces for durability. (See images.)

Building outlines. These PDFs allow students to place their sentence pieces in pre-made portions. They can then glue them and add proper conjunctions and punctuation. (Example: the complex sentence outline has a spot for independent and dependent clauses.)

Task cards. All of the clauses are in sentence form on 20 task cards. I use these cards as review another day.

Editable sentences key. ALL of the practice sentences are in an editable Word Doc for you. I left the answer key editable for ease of use. Feel free to use these sentences on a quiz or exam.

When students need practice for sentence structure and punctuation rules, I add hands-on sentence building to our grammar practice.

Please note: The answer key is included for the task cards only, as I cannot anticipate what sentences students will create.

Perfect for. . .

Reviewing punctuation and sentence structure rules. When students need an alternative to the grammar worksheet, grammar manipulatives allow students to play with their language.

The best part: You can use these grammar activities time and time again!

As a bonus? The creator of these grammar activities is the author of The English Grammar Workbook for Grades 6, 7, & 8. She is a published author for middle school English grammar.
