What educators are saying

Perfect as a bellringer. Students research in teams and they presented the info to the other ones. Thanks!

Description

Want a quick and easy way to teach your students about Holy Week and Easter traditions in Spanish-speaking countries? Try this fun and engaging Internet activity. With your download, you will receive a student activity sheet called “Busca en el Internet: Semana Santa y Pascua” ("Internet Search: Holy Week and Easter"), an answer key, a description of different ways I have used this activity in my classroom, and links for four YouTube videos to show in class to allow students to “see” what they have learned.

The student activity sheet contains eleven Spanish terms associated with Holy Week and Easter which students match with the English descriptions given. Students use the Internet to read about the different Spanish terms and use what they learn to determine the correct answer choice.

While there are many Holy Week and Easter traditions and customs throughout the Spanish-speaking world, the following terms are used for this activity:

Las cofradías
El capirote
El paso
Los costaleros
La saeta
Las alfombras
La fanesca
Las empanadas de vigilia
Cuasimodo
Los huasos
Los cascarones

I typically use this activity with Spanish I or II students, but because the answer choices are in English, it could be used in any subject area to expose students to holiday traditions different than their own. This activity is also a great springboard for a discussion and future study on additional Holy Week and Easter traditions in the Spanish-speaking world or in any culture around the world.

Hope you enjoy and Feliz Pascua!

Go ahead and plan for next year by downloading or wish-listing my “buscas” for Navidad and El Día de los Tres Reyes Magos. And don’t forget to FOLLOW ME to find out when I post more internet activities and even FREEBIES!
