Why Teach Self-Advocacy
Self-advocacy is the ability to speak up in order to get our needs met. This is an important social-emotional skill children and teens need to achieve success in and outside of the classroom.
SUPER Self-Advocacy
A poster and worksheet introducing the idea for self-advocacy is included. Being a SUPER Self-Advocate means:
- Staying calm
- Understanding the problem
- Problem-solving
- Expressing yourself
- Reflecting
Self-Advocacy Scenarios
The self-advocacy scenarios include real-life situations at school, at home, with friends, and in public. In all, there are over 90 scenarios to discuss and practice. Here are a few examples:
- The teacher says it is time to turn in your quiz but you aren't finished yet. Why is this a problem? What can you do?
- The teacher moved your seat near a fan. You can't hear well when she gives instructions. Why is this a problem? What can you do?
- When you buy some books at the store, you realize the cashier didn't give you the correct change. What can you do?
- You are studying for a test at the library when you notice your laptop is almost out of battery. What can you do?
- A friend keeps flicking your hat and making it fall off. They think it's funny, but it annoys you. What can you do?
How to Use the Task Cards
The task cards can be used in guided small groups, as part of class discussions, or in partner discussion before sharing out with the larger group or class. You can also choose to have "centers" by putting a set of cards in each center and having groups move around to discuss and answer questions. It is best to partner students in need up with peer role models. Regular education teachers, special education teachers, and other support professionals could all benefit from using these task cards with their students.
Note that both color and black/white options are included! Answer keys are also included with sample answers for each of the cards. Of course, individual student answers may vary.
