Before students can feel confident as expository writing experts, they need your guidance. Offer my explicit examples of how to write topic sentences for expository paragraphs. Before students are ready to inform, they will need many opportunities to write a Topic Sentence. This is a critical skill for long-term success in the Common Core ELA writing curriculum.

A good expository paragraph or essay begins with a well-written paragraph, which must have a good topic sentence. With my materials, your students see it's fun to write paragraphs about polar bears. They also learn science content through activities such as sorting polar bear facts and science vocabulary matching.

To meet the Common Core English Language Arts standards, second and third graders must collect facts from multiple sources and use facts to write expository paragraphs. They must be able to write clearly about their findings. That's where the graphic organizer and the strong topic sentence come in handy.
