What educators are saying

I love this resource. My students found it simple to follow along with the different characters to help them remember what to do for each one.
This resource is an excellent transition from the beanie boo strategies used in previous guided reading to decodable strategies used in phonetic guided reading.

Description

These Science of Reading Decoding Strategy Fans will allow you to Model and Teach your students how to use decoding strategies to help them decode unknown words which will ultimately lead to comprehension and build fluency.

The purpose of these Science of Reading Decoding Strategy Fans is to teach children that when they are stuck on a word, they must FOCUS all of their attention on the word and use a variety of decoding strategies to solve the unknown word.

When a student gets stuck on a word while reading, we want to give them the tools to attack unknown words. Our new Animal Friends can help us do just that.

Introduce these strategies in order so that they can go through all of the strategies when they are stuck on a word:

Pointy Porcupine™
Grapheme Guppy™

Phoneme Frog™
Syllable Slug™
Blending Bluebird™
Say It Sloth™
Check it Cheetah™

They are easy-to-use for your students and easy-to-prep for YOU!

Included in this unit is two sets of Decoding Strategy Fans in a variety of orientations:

  • ☞ Decoding Strategy Instructional Trifold
  • ☞ large vertical Teacher Demonstration Fan
  • ☞ small vertical student-use Decoding Strategy Fans – These smaller fans are easy for the students to use and keep with them while they are reading at your teacher table or when they are reading independently.  They are the perfect size for students to keep a set in their independent book bins or basket.
